DaisyDisk vs GrandPerspective vs OmniDiskSweeper: which disk visualizer is worth it in 2026

When your Mac complains about storage, the fastest way to see the problem is a disk visualizer. Three names dominate: DaisyDisk (paid, polished), GrandPerspective (free, open source) and OmniDiskSweeper (free, utilitarian). We ran all three on the same cluttered 40 GB drive.

Where each one shines

DaisyDisk's sunburst map is genuinely faster to interpret — you find the 18 GB "iOS backups hidden inside ~/Library" blob in seconds instead of minutes. Its scan also surfaces System Data that GrandPerspective misses without extra permissions. If you clean your disk more than twice a year, the one-time price pays for itself in saved time.

GrandPerspective is the best free option if you're comfortable granting Full Disk Access and deleting files through Finder. The treemap shows the same data; it just takes longer to parse.

OmniDiskSweeper is a list, not a map. Great for targeted hunts ("where is XcodeDerivedData?"), poor for discovery.

What they all miss (and what to do about it)

Disk visualizers show big files. They don't show the thousands of tiny cache files that AI coding tools scatter around — Claude Code transcripts, Cursor session data, npm/npx caches. For that, follow our AI tool cleanup guides and run a dedicated cleaner afterwards.

Our pick

Use DaisyDisk (macOS) if you want the job done in one sitting — the sunburst + collector workflow is the least error-prone we've tested. Keep GrandPerspective installed as the free second opinion. Either way, pair the visualizer with the cache-specific steps in our Mac disk full guide.
